Not too many years from now, paper cheques will start getting marginalised by electronic methods of payment. Further down the road, cheques might get completely extinct.
Update (26-Mar-11): New payments methods, such as NEFT/RTGS, PayPal, credit/debit cards, Google Checkout, smartphone-based payments (using NFC), SMS-based payments, and virtual currencies (Facebook Credits, Microsoft Points, etc.), among other reasons, will be the driving force behind obsolescence of paper cheques.
